FAQs

Why the early start?
Our hikes generally start around sunrise as a rule, but this is flexible.
The main reason for starting so early is to avoid the heat, especially in summer. It can get very hot in Cape Town’s summer (over 30 degrees C), so starting early means the hike is more pleasant in cooler weather and less water is needed. There is less risk of heat related issues, and an added bonus is we miss most of the traffic on the mountain from the other tourists.
We do understand that not everyone likes getting up early, but the benefits far outweigh the early start. And you finish the hike early enough to do more sightseeing, or go home and take a nap.
What do I need to bring on the hike?
  • At least 1.5 litres of water per person
  • snacks for the hike
  • sunscreen and hat
  • a warm layer/windbreaker. Yes, even in summer
  • good walking shoes (not fashion sneakers)
  • a day backpack
If you don’t have anything needed (backpack/rain jacket) let us know and we’ll bring it for you.
I don't know which hike to do...

If you are unsure of which hike to do, just ask. Based on your fitness, experience and what you want to achieve, we’ll be able to recommend the trail for you.

What if it's raining?

The weather can change quickly and rain can come in overnight. There is the saying “no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear”. But we understand that you may not have packed the correct gear, or feel confident in going out in bad weather. Or you just simply don’t want to get wet and cold. If you have flexible dates we can reschedule. However, the first choice is to still hike. The mountain has a completely different feel to it, hiding its secrets in the clouds. As long as it’s safe to hike, we want to go.

What is the hiking group size?

There will never be more than 6 people in the group with only one guide. If you want a private hike (no one else joins your group), that can be arranged at an extra fee.
