Situated above Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa, Jonkershoek reserve has beautiful vistas and waterfalls. It is the birthplace of four rivers, giving it lush vegetation. There are two hikes we choose from in Jonkershoek. A beginner, relatively flat there-and-back again trail along a river, ending in a waterfall. This is a half day hike.
For those looking for more, there is the Panorama route. As the name implies, it has spectacular views all around! This route requires moderate fitness and takes about 7 hours.
Please note, only 20 vehicles are allowed in the reserve per day. To ensure that we are one of those vehicles, we need to arrive at the reserve entrance by 6am (summer) or 7am (winter). This is non-negotiable, as otherwise it adds 10km to the day’s hike. That is too much for the Panorama route, and we will not do that route if we are not one of the vehicles let in.
